Scent Description: Another fantastic Stirling original scent, Varen was a project 2 years in the making.  It was originally made for a Dutch wetshaving forum, so we gave it the name Varen, the Dutch word for "fern". This natural fougere is a powerful blend of oakmoss, lavender, coumarin, vetiver, sage, cedar, lichen, and geranium.

Ingredients: Denatured Alcohol, Fragrance

WARNING: DO NOT USE if you are pregnant or have epilepsy due to the oakmoss content.

Sizes:

Full-Size: 50ml

Sample: 5ml

Customers praised this green fougere cologne as "elegant" and "sophisticated" with complex, harmonious scents. Reviews highlight excellent longevity and projection rivaling expensive designer fragrances. The scent evokes ferns and woods, described as refreshing and unique. Some noted initial intensity that settles quickly. Customers appreciate the value and wished for matching soap and aftershave products.

Green Fougere excellence

This is an original creation by Rod and it is excellent. I'm a big fan of Fougeres especially green ones. This is in some part due to Stirling. I find many artisanal soap makers go too sweet for my taste. I don't blame them it appeals to large quantity of people so it's a smart business move. I find them more appropriate for young people. I can't go into the office and make an impression that I want to make with those sweet sense. This is not sweet. This is more complex and harmonizes beautiful green scents. This is something I would wear anytime but particularly in a setting where I wanted to make an impression of casual sophistication. This is a power cologne without needing to broadcast power. I find it more European in scent profile. I wish Sterling would sell the soap, the balm, and the aftershave splash as well as the shampoo, conditioner, and body butter so I can do it up on my next trip to Paris!

In my top three

If ferns were capable of giving off a perfume scent then this would be what I think it would smell like.. the first review listed here does a great job. I can see wearing this while dressed to impress. Or on the town. This is in a word: elegant. The only question I have is where's the soap, the aftershave, the bath soaps? I wasn't around back when this was released so I don't know if they plan on reissuing it but I really hope they do if that's an option.

Signature Scent

After acquiring over two dozen after shave and cologne samples from Stirling Soap I consider Varen their signature scent.
The complexity of ingredients and its uniqueness, to my nose at least, culminates in a consice and balanced fragrance resulting in my purchase of a full size bottle.
This is a refreshing alternative scent.

Earth and woods

Something just reminds me of the woods with this scent .A little goes a long way and it melts in good by the end of the day.I pair it sometimes with the vetiver witch hazel and it works.

Classic oak moss fragrance

Love this fragrance, even though it kind of threw me at first. My first spray it seemed a bit intense. It quickly settles down into a wonderful green in your face scent. It has great projection and last longer than many way more expensive fragrances. Not for everyone, but if you like fougre scents, this will grow on you. Love the dry down, so bright and clean. Is it a bit rough around the edges? Yes. However that becomes some of the appeal. Not for everyday, but right after a shave and shower it is so refreshing.

A unique scent that I love.

Varen might not be for everyone, but I love it. The other review does a good job with describing the scent, and it's really hard for me to put it into words. It's like rolling in a pile of ferns in a bog. "Dank" is often used to describe the scent, and I would also call it "mellow". The fragrance has a slightly spicy kick at first, but smooths out quickly and lasts a long time.

A reboot of the classic Fougere

I recently ordered Varen along with a sample of Fougere Royale 2010, the original fern scent. I gotta say, I like Varen much more! It truly has captured the spirit of the fern and its habitat. Overall, Varen reminds me a classic Geoffry Beene fragrance, being like both Grey Flannel and Bowling Green. Varen is one of the least linear fragrances I own. It begins much like Polo or Bogart, with its evergreen quality. The heart resembles the floral character of Grey Flannel. The drydown reminds me of one part Jovan Musk with the spicy smell of cedar pencil shavings. All in all, it is an excellent scent and I predict it will rise to the top of the Stirling line, alongside Executive Man. Varen is a great value for money because it smells like a very expensive cologne. It has all the longevity of an $80 designer fragrance. I look forward to its release in Spring of 2020!
